Growing up in Pacific Palisades, Melissa attended Carl Thorpe and Marlborough Schools as well as Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass. She received her B. S. in Critical Studies in Film and Rhetoric from the University of California, Berkeley and went on to receive her M.F.A. in Cinema from the University of Southern California.

A resident of Santa Monica, Melissa not only supports, but actively participates in many charitable efforts. She is also an active board member of the Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties Charitable Foundation which services a large variety of local charities.
